Suicides Worry Child Ombudsman

The Swedish ombudsman for children’s rights has decided to hold emergency meetings with the local governments in 2 southern Swedish provinces where problem youngsters put in special homes have committed suicide because of the abuse from other youngsters.

Swedish news media have given headline coverage to several cases of teen-age girls who were badly beaten by other youngsters without the personnel taking action.

In one case, a youth admitted to the police that he beat a young girl before she ran off and killed herself, but that no charges were made and the case was closed.
