Liberals Want to End EU Farm Subsidies

The Swedish Liberal Party wants the European Union’s agricultural subsidies to end by 2015. At a rally during the campaign for the European Parliament, Liberal leader Jan Björklund said the 40 percent of the EU budget that goes to agriculture is a waste, which also prevents the poor countries from exporting their agricultural products.

Björklund told the rally “There is a very powerful coalition in Europe, between the socialist parties who like regulations and subsidies and customs protection on the one hand, and on the other hand many non-socialist parties influenced by powerful farmer and agricultural lobby groups.”

Björklund pointed to the large right wing parties of Germany, Spain, and France, and said it is this coalition which has prevented modernization.
