Heart Death Risk from Parathyroid Hormone

New Swedish research indicates that increased levels in the blood of the hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands increases the risk of older men to die of heart disease.

The study was carried out by researchers at Uppsala University Hospital, and is published in the online edition of the journal “Circulation”.

Dr Emil Hagström, one of the main researchers involved in the study, tells the newspaper “Uppsala Nya Tidning” that their work indicates that the hormone may be as important a risk factor for death from heart disease as smoking or diabetes.
