Delay on Right to Education
The United Nations wants to know if undocumented children in Sweden will be allowed to go to school. But the Swedish government is delaying its answer.
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has criticised Sweden several times for not living up to the international convention guaranteeing every child an education. Their concern is that the children of asylum seekers who have gone underground are not always allowed to go to school here.
On Wednesday Swedish Minister for Social Affairs Göran Hägglund will be testifying before the committee. The newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” has obtained a copy of the government’s written response. It says the Swedish government wants to start a new study into the issue.
Representatives from Save the Children, the Church of Sweden, and the Swedish pediatricians’ association have all expressed concern that resolution has been delayed while children suffer. (gw)
