rail and boat traffic stopped

Fire Closes Gothenburg Bridge

A fire near a railroad bridge in Gothenburg stopped rail and boat traffic Saturday.

The newspaper “Göteborgs-Posten reports that the cable fire at the Marieholms bridge, a swing bridge across Gothenburg’s Göta Älv river, froze the bridge half open at around 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Personnel from the Swedish Rail Administration were able to move the bridge into position, and traffic could resume at around 1:00 PM.

But the Rail Administration’s press spokesman says trains have to go slow because the signals are stuck in the “stop” position. Boat traffic in the Göta Älv was stopped while the bridge was under repair.

The Rail Administration suspects the fire may have been caused by arson, possibly in connection with the attempted theft of metals.
