Bridge fire

Göta Älv Still Closed to Larger Boats

Larger vessels are still unable to travel through the Göta Älv river in Gothenburg, following a fire at the Marieholms railroad bridge Saturday.

A cable fire broke out at the swing bridge at around 8:00 AM Saturday morning. Personnel from the Swedish Rail Administration were able to move the bridge back into position so trains could resume services across the river. But boat traffic in the Göta Älv has stopped as the bridge is unable to open for them while it is under repair.

The Swedish Rail Administration says it hopes to have the bridge moveable for larger boats by Monday morning.

The Rail Administration suspects the fire may have been caused by arson, possibly in connection with the attempted theft of metals.
