According to Aftonbladet’s sources the motive is Sweden’s military presence in Afghanista. But Anders Gjörle of the Foreign Ministry’s information service told Swedish Radio News that it is a reaction to the Pakistani army’s efforts in the Swat valley. According to him, Islamists are retaliating by threatening international targets like embassies and hotels.
Gunnar Adler, a Civil Servant based at the Swedish Embassy in Islamabad, also speak of an increased threat against all international targets.
“There have been a number of attacks against market places and hotels. But up until now we had no reason to believe that Sweden would be under threat,” he told Aftonbladet.
Last year six people were killed when a car bomb exploded outside the Danish embassy. Earlier this year, nine Pakistani citizens from a known terrorist group admitted to have been behind the explosion. (rm)
