Swede Visits Sentenced Reporters

On Tuesday the Swedish Ambassador to North Korea, Mats Foyer, visited the two American journalists sentenced to hard labour in North Korea. A spokesman for the US foreign office has confirmed that they have met, but did not disclose any details about the visit.

The journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, were arrested in March by North Korean border police near the border to China. At the time, they were filming a report on North Koreans fleeing over the Tumen River into China for an American TV Channel. North Korean officials have claimed that they entered the country illegally and in a secret trial they were sentenced to 12 year of “reform through hard labour” for an unspecified but “grave crime”.

As the US have no embassy of their own in Pyongyang, they are represented by Sweden in the matter. (rm)
