The buses feature the parallel hybrid I-SAM technology, which is currently being developed across the whole of the Volvo Group. It is called hybrid because the bus is powered by a combination of an electric motor and a diesel engine. It is parallel because it can be powered by either power source independently or in combination - using both sources of energy at the same time. Tests carried out by Volvo and the bus operator Arriva London indicates significant savings in both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
The introduction of the new hybrid Double Deck bus in London is following hot on the heels that of the Single Deck in May in Volvo’s home town of Gothenburg, on the west coast of Sweden.
