At least six people have died following a fire Saturday night at an apartment building in the western Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. Five were children or teenagers.
The fire began in the ground floor of the building around 10:00 PM, and all of the victims died of smoke inhalation. The police say the victims were found in a stairwell, and that they were five girls ranging from a baby to a girl in her teens, and a woman in her 40’s.
Two other people have been taken to the hospital, one is said to have life-threatening injuries.
Rescuers said the fire was limited to one apartment, but other apartments in the five-floor building sustained smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but according to Swedish Radio News so far there is no suspicion of arson.
