Reinfeldt Condemns Suu Kyi Verdict

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has condemned the verdict against Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel peace prize winner Aung Sang Suu Kyi. Speaking as the head of the current Swedish EU presidency, Reinfeldt announced the European Union will sharpen its measures against the junta regime in Burma.

The four people responsible for the trial against Suu Kyi will be banned from entering the EU and economic ties with the Asian country will be frozen once more, Reinfeldt said. Earlier on Tuesday, Suu Kyi had been sentenced to an additional 18 months’ house arrest by a court in Rangoon for having violated state security laws. (ah)
