Local Policing in Swedish Cities: An Answer to Youth Violence?

Two different methods of policing—and two different results. Young people are setting fire to cars and throwing rocks at police in the university city of Uppsala, but Stockholm suburbs are calm.

Starting four years ago, Stockholm police began setting up small, local police stations in suburbs like Ronna, where unemployment is high. But the Uppsala police authorities have taken another approach. Instead of opening local stations, they’ve been shutting them down.

Can this have anything to do the fact that Stockholm has been spared the youth violence that's been plaguing Uppsala? Radio Sweden's Linda Nyberg reports.
