EU Checks on Human Rights in Zimbabwe

The Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson, has arrived in Harare for talks with the leadership of Zimbabwe. Carlsson is heading a delegation of the European Union, together with EU-Commission member Karel de Gucht who is in charge of the union’s program for development and humanitarian aid.

The EU delegation is visiting Zimbabwe to gather first-rate informations on the state of human rights in the country. At his visit in neighboring South Africa, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt as acting head of the EU presidency made it clear that the economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe would not be lifted before progress in the human rights issue was confirmed.
