Amnesty: Fears of Torture

Amnesty International has expressed concern that the Swedes recently arrested in Pakistan may have been tortured.

One of the four Swedish citizens is Mehdi Ghezali, who spent two and a half years as a prisoner at Guantanamo before he was returned to Sweden.

The others are a couple and a child.

Elisabeth Löfgren, press secretary for the Swedish section of Amnesty, says they don’t know how serious the risk of torture may be for the three adults, but there are very concerned.

Amnesty says the Swedes must be guaranteed basic rights, such as that for legal representation, to know what the charges are against them, and for a fair trial. Amnesty is especially worried about the situation facing the child and has taken its concerns to the Pakistan embassy in Stockholm.
