Segregation To Blame For Worse Schooling?

Increased segregation is the reason why Swedish pupils are doing worse at school today, compared to the 1990's. That's the conclusion of a new report by Sweden's National Agency for Education, published Friday.

The report's authors say that the establishment of independent schools and increased segregation means that many pupils with similar backgrounds are now going to the same schools. Any effect that more gifted students would have on weaker students is then lost, if they aren't even going to the same schools anymore, according to the report.

The authors also say that pupils are spending more time working by themselves, with fewer hours spent in classrooms with teachers by the whiteboard.
