The French Minister, Bruno Le Maire, told French newspaper Les Echos that he is prepared for a show down with the Swedish EU presidency. Along with 20 other ministers for agriculture he has written an open letter to Erlandsson. They demand more support for the dairy sector, which has been hit hard by the economic crisis.
Sweden is part of the minority of EU counties that no longer want subsidies for the EU dairy farmers, and are supported by the United Kingdom, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Malta. Erlandsson told Swedish news Agency TT that the aim of Monday’s meeting is to calm the situation down as well as stabilizing the dairy market in Europe.
