Bildt “Regrets” Abdullah’s Pull-Out

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt says he regrets that Abdullah Abdullah, opponent of President Hamid Karzai, has pulled out of the second round of the Afghan presidential elections. Bildt told Swedish Radio news that Abdullah’s step indicates “insecurities” within the Afghan political process.

He hoped that there will be political talks in Kabul to solve the situation, Bildt added. The Swedish Foreign Minister also stated that Abdullah’s withdrawal deprives the second round of the election of its legitimacy. Incumbent president Karzai will now face no opponent in the run-off ballot. Abdullah had announced his pull-out on Sunday citing the danger of fraud in the election process.
