Lisbon and the Swedish Presidency

As the Czech president Vaclav Klaus reluctantly put pen to paper Tuesday and signed the Lisbon Treaty, the Swedish European Union presidency achieved an important goal.

With the last obstacle removed, Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is chairing the EU until the end of the year, will call an EU summit shortly to begin the negotiations for the posts of the first EU council president, the council secretary, and the foreign policy high representative.
