Morocco Banishes Swedish Diplomat

Published onsdag 4 november 2009 kl 20.55

A Swedish diplomat is to be sent home from Morocco. The Swedish ambassador in Rabat, Michael Odevald, was summoned to the Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi Fihri on Wednesday afternoon to be told that one of his diplomats is to leave the country without delay within a few days.

According to news agency AFP, the diplomat has been accused of handing over official Moroccan documents to separatists in Western Sahara. However, this has not been confirmed by the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

Cecilia Juhlin, head of the Foreign Ministry’s Communications Department, told Swedish news agency TT that the Moroccan government feels the diplomat has “acted in a way not compatible with the diplomatic position”.

At the moment, no official Swedish protest is on the cards.

“We will have a dialogue with the Moroccans regarding this, but the matter will be handled through diplomatic channels. We will not issue a statement regarding this matter,” Juhlin said to TT.
