Tolgfors Wants Swedish Helicopters in Afghanistan

American helicopters in afghanistan

Sweden's defence minister Sten Tolgfors wants to send the country's own helicopters to Afghanistan rather than rely on other nations to transport its wounded to hospital.

Last Wednesday, five Swedish soldiers were wounded, two seriously, by a roadside bomb and had to wait two hours before an American helicopter arrived.

Swedish helicopters will be in place in Afghanistan in 2011 but Tolgfors wants the armed forces to examine whether any could be sent sooner. One solution, the defence minister told Svenska Dagbladet, would be for Sweden to hire or buy a helicopter in Afghanistan.

The last of the wounded Swedish troops was flown home on Saturday. The 30 year old, who is seriously injured, was taken to hospital in Uppsala.
