Malmström New EU Commissioner

Swedish Minister for European Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, has been named the country’s next EU commissioner. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced the appointment Tuesday afternoon in Stockholm.

Malmström replaces Margot Wallström who has represented Sweden in Brussels since 1999. In 2004 Wallström became Commission Vice President.

In his announcement Reinfeldt said that no Swedish politician is in the running for the foreign policy post of the EU. He refused to comment on a possible candidate for the Union presidency.
