Wallström Wants Affirmative Action

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced that the Liberal Party's Cecilia Malmström will be Sweden's next EU commissioner. She is one of only four women nominated for posts in the new EU commission. In the present commission there are eight women out of 27 representatives.

Sweden's present EU commissioner Margot Wallström now wants a system where all governments would nominate one man and one woman for the post.

"They will resist that for all kinds if reasons but if you want to change the situation you need some affirmative action.  What kind of impression does this give of today’s Europe? It is not fair in a Europe where women make up the majority of the population.  “Wallström said.
