Stockholm's Stadsmission has adopted the housing first scheme to help the homeless

Housing First Hits Stockholm

Stockholm is to adopt "Housing First" , a project pioneered in New York which immediately moves the homeless off the streets or out of shelters into their own apartments without resorting to emergency shelters or step-by-step housing schemes.

The scheme is unusual in that it gives housing to those in need without a requirement that they give up abusing alcohol or drug abuse.

There are estimated to be more than 3000 homless in Stockholm. The Stockholm City Mission is one of those behind the project and its Director Marika Markovits spoke to Radio Sweden's Azariah Kiros about the project.
