Danish Police Criticized for Mass Arrests

Danish police have been sharply criticized for their actions against demonstrators at the Copenhagen Climate Summit. On Swedish Radio local Stockholm politician Mattias Bernhardsson of the Socialist Justice Party said the police had clearly overreacted by arresting more than a thousand peaceful protesters on Saturday. He said that forcing these people to sit on the ground for hours in the cold was unacceptable.

A Danish police spokesman said the actions had been necessary to prevent violence. Most of the apprehended were released on Sunday morning. Police had dispersed the demonstration after a policeman was injured when stones were thrown. There was also damage to shop windows and store fronts.
