Millennium Goes Hollywood

Three Swedish films are to receive the Hollywood treatment.

Yellowbird, which holds the movie rights for the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium thriller trilogy, says Sony is interested in buying the English-language rights.

The three books have been a cult hit worldwide. Sony reportedly plans to make its own versions, based on the books, and not remakes of the three Swedish movies. Yellowbird’s Mikael Wallen says filming should start during 2011, and the first movie could be out during the second half of 2012 at the earliest.

Larsson’s books follow investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker researcher Lisbeth Salander, as they uncover family and state secrets. Larsson died in 2004, a year before the first book was published.
