Heads Hire People With Same Ethnicity

Ethnic background often steers hiring practices, a new study from the Institute for Labour Market Policy Evaluation shows. Ethnic Swedes are more likely to hire other ethnic Swedes, while business heads with an immigrant background are more likely to hire people with an immigrant background.

The connection between ethnicity and hiring practices was found among all types of businesses, though the tendency was stronger in the hotel, restaurant, and transport sectors.

According to Swedish Radio News, the study was conducted in order to investigate why immigrants have a hard time finding jobs in Sweden. The study indicates that an explanation may lie in the fact that less than four percent of businesses are headed by immigrants, making it less likely that immigrants are hired compared to ethnic Swedes.
