Record Leap in Swedish Population

Preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden indicate that the population here increased by a record amount during 2009.

During the year gone by the Swedish population went up by 84,000 to just over 9.3 million inhabitants. The only time previously there was such a large increase was the year after the end of the Second World War, 1946.

Statistics Sweden says that besides a continued high number of births and immigration, another reason for the leap is a sharp decrease in people leaving the country to live abroad.
