Reported crime has soared in Sweden

Record Crime Figures for 2009

A record number of crimes were reported to police in Sweden last year.

Figures from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention show that crime on the whole went up by 15 percent during the last decade with the sharpest increase happening in the last five years.

In 2009, reported crime increased on the previous year by two percent to 1.4 million crimes. That's the highest number since figures were first compiled in 1950.

Violence, sex and hate crimes have gone up in particular but theft and all car crime has lowered. Violent crime went up by 50 percent during the decade.
