Collecting after the tsunami

Less Generous to Haiti

One month after the earthquake in Haiti, Swedes continue to donate for reconstruction.

According to estimates so far around 2 and a half million dollars in donations for Haiti have been made to Swedish charities. But that’s far less than was given after the 2004 Asian tsunami, which also cost the lives of several hundred Swedes who had been vacationing in Thailand.

One month after that disaster, donations here were five times as great as those to Haiti.

The situation is even worse at the Swedish Red Cross, tainted by a fraud scandal and criticised for high salaries to its top leadership. So far it’s collected less than one-tenth as much for Haiti as during the first month after the tsunami.
