The King and his daughter Victoria

Two Thirds Want King to Carry On

A majority of Swedes wants King Carl XVI Gustaf to continue reigning even after he reaches retirement age next year. A survey published by daily Dagens Nyheter shows that 64 percent of the country’s population would like to see the monarch on the throne as long as his health permits. A 17 percent minority wants the king to abdicate in favor of crown princess Victoria in 2011. Carl Gustaf has been king since 1973, when he succeeded his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf.
