School Board Critical of Student Rating
The National Agency for Education is critical of the way elementary school students are being judged by their teachers. A spokesperson for the agency said that instead of evaluating pupils’ levels of knowledge and abilities teachers tend to rate children’s personalities and behavior.
The Minister for Education, Jan Björklund, called the board’s criticism unjustified.
Björklund told the TT news agency that the evaluation system proves to be satisfactory. He said that teachers should be entitled to assess the pupils’ knowledge as well as their social behavior.
The rating system was introduced in 2008 after a forty-year period during which elementary students were not judged at all.
