End Violence Against Women

A number of events are taking place in Sweden today to celebrate International Women's Day.

The theme of this year's campaign is ending violence against women.

Almost 25 percent of women in Europe have experienced some form of domestic violence in their lives and a new campaign has been launched by Spain, the holders of the EU Presidency, to introduce a policy directive on action to prevent and combat all forms of violence against women.

Swedish EU parliamentarian and Social Democrat Anna Hedh works inside Brussels on women's rights issues and told Radio Sweden that member states still have a long way to go in the fight for equal rights for women.

" It's been a problem for years and it's only in the last 2 years that we've begun talking about it in parliament and i know that the Spanish have felt great shame over this issue," Hedh told Radio Sweden.

"Domestic violence against women is a big problem in Europe, including Sweden," Anna Hedh said.
