Cranes Make Their Spring Entrance

In a traditional sign that spring is finally on its way after a long, harsh winter, the year’s first crane has arrived at the lake Hornborgasjön in southern Sweden. The bird appeared later than usual—last year, cranes began gathering at the site at the beginning of March.

Birdwatchers counted a record number of cranes at the lake in 2009, nearly 18,500 at its height.
