Generally, refugees are only granted permanent residence in Sweden if an armed conflict is taking place in their home country. This is not the case in Gaza, but if refugees can prove that they being personally threatened by Hamas, they may well stay in Sweden, the Migration Board explained. The militant Islamist organization came into power by democratic elections in Gaza in 2006.
