Gaza Refugees Can Stay

Refugees from Gaza who are persecuted or threatened by the Hamas organization will in future be allowed to stay in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Board has ruled. The decision follows a recommendation of the European Union to classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Generally, refugees are only granted permanent residence in Sweden if an armed conflict is taking place in their home country. This is not the case in Gaza, but if refugees can prove that they being personally threatened by Hamas, they may well stay in Sweden, the Migration Board explained. The militant Islamist organization came into power by democratic elections in Gaza in 2006.
