Heavy Cost of School Fires

The cost of a shockingly high number of school fires in Sweden last year has been put at a billion kronor.

There were 457 school fires in the country in 2009 with around half of that number started deliberately.

The school fire statistics, compiled by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, are however, down on 2008, which was a record year for school fires in Sweden. 512 schools were affected by fire.

Last year, according to research by Dagens Nyheter newspaper, six of the biggest school fires were started by boys aged between 15 and 16.
