Warning for Floods As Snow Melts

The Swedish Meteorological Institute (SMHI) warns that floods could hit southern Sweden this weekend as the winter’s abundant snow melts rapidly in the spring temperatures. Several municipalities have begun placing sandbags in strategic positions, while homeowners on the island of Öland have already suffered damage.

Most of the towns in risk lay near creeks and streams that can suddenly swell to raging rivers as the snow melts. To make things worse, heavy rain is also expected to fall in the area the coming days.
