The part of the story that has aroused the most outrage is the tacit and sometimes vocal support given to the boy by adults in the community. At the end of the school year, a priest invited Oscar to the school’s end-of-year engagement in the town church, despite the fact that he had switched schools. The boy, who was very popular among his schoolmates, went into the room and began giving out flowers to his former teachers and friends, and received applause from adults and schoolchildren alike.
Later that night, he raped another girl.
