Opposition Calls for Petrol Duty Hike

In another deliberate leak ahead of the shadow budget Monday, Sweden's red-green opposition say they would raise petrol and diesel duty on cars and trucks if they were to win the upcoming election in September.

The Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party would also force electricity generators to pay more taxes on their profits.

Green Party spokesperson Maria Wetterstrand says however that consumers would get a bigger rebate for transport costs in their tax returns, and so any hike in petrol prices would be negated, she claims.
