Gov't Clubs Through Cash Bonus For Swedish Learners

The Swedish parliament has voted to approve a government proposal Thursday to make bonus payments to immigrant students that quickly pass their Swedish language courses both permanent and nationwide.

A test scheme has given immigrants a tax-free sum of 1500 dollars if they learn Swedish as "encouragement" to learn quickly.

Opposition Social Democrats say they will scrap the plan if they win the next election.

A government study has also suggested introducing courses in Swedish society for the newly arrived. It would look at "Swedish values", the welfare state, and daily life here.
