Bildt Supports Ship to Gaza Operation

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has come out against Israel's plans to hinder the passage of the Ship to Gaza humanitarian convoy, a press release reveals. Replying to a written question from Social Democrat Helén Pettersson, Bildt wrote that he “assumes that the sailing voyage to Gaza is being pursued with peaceful means, and that it will be met in a similar way by Israeli authorities.”

Bildt also expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Swedish government and the European Union, he wrote, are working for Gaza’s borders to be opened “immediately and with no strings attached.” They should “be kept open for humanitarian help, commercial goods, and people," but he hopes that the campaign will not lead to a confrontation with the Israeli state.

The Ship to Gaza campaign consists of a convoy of ten ships carrying food, cement, medicine, and other necessities to Gaza. Although it has yet to reach Gaza, an Israeli spokesman warned on Tuesday that the ships would be stopped by force if necessary.
