Foreign-Born Parents Steer Life's Course

New figures from Statistics Sweden show that one's parents' background affects more than just a person's upbringing—it may even steer one's future housing, education, and career.

Children with foreign-born parents are more likely to earn worse grades in school compared to their classmates with Swedish-born parents, even if they themselves are born in Sweden. In addition, people with foreign-born parents are less likely to enjoy high-ranking positions in their companies, and tend to be overqualified for their jobs.
