Pressure to Ban Drivers from Texting

Almost every other Swede has sent a text message from their mobile phone at some time while driving, according to a new study by the insurance company Trygg Hansa.

The Swedish automobile association wants to see text messaging behind the wheel forbidden.

News agency TT reports that the Swedish infrastructure minister, Åsa Torstensson, does not see changing the law as a solution.

She says that to have an effect, cell phones in cars would have to be banned altogether. It is the conversations, themselves, that she sees as distracting, therefore, a hands-free device does not help. However, she does not believe a complete ban is realistic.

Denmark, Norway and Finland are just a few of the European countries that have banned using cell phones while driving, unless a hands-free device is used.
