Uranium Deposit Could be Among Biggest

An Australian mining company, Aura Energy, believes that uranium deposits in north-western Sweden are among the biggest in the world. The company estimated there could be as much as 140,000 tons of uranium in the deposit and even larger amounts in surrounding areas, reported news agency TT.

The newspaper “Aftonbladet” says a nuclear power plant like the third reactor at Forsmark, just north of Stockholm, holds 100 tons of uranium of which 30 to 40 tons is replaced every year.

Uranium prospecting and mining is a very controversial issue in Sweden, strongly opposed by environmental and peace groups.
