Divisions Over Gas, Oil Prospecting in Sweden

A Swedish Radio news survey shows that Swedish political parties are divided over ongoing and new requests from foreign companies for test drilling for oil and natural gas.

Some claim that discoveries would reduce this Nordic nation's dependence on foreign imports - others claim that wide-scale exploitation would cause environmental damage and reduce the interest in alternative energy sources.

Local governments are also divided - some insisting that existing legislation is sufficient to safeguard the environment while others have launched protest movements against ongoing test drilling in the southern province of Skåne.
