Mushroom Powder: Key to a Green Future?

A powder made from an Indonesian mushroom may give diapers, bandages, panty liners and tissues an environmentally friendly future.

Swedish Radio news reports that the the mushroom powder is similar to snowflakes, but that it has a very high ability to absorb wetness. The powder is said to be bio-degradable, besides eliminating odor and preventing bacterial growth.

Akram Zamani, a doctoral student in engineering at Sweden's University of Borås, presented the results of her four-year research project into environmentally sound, super-absorbent materials on Wednesday.
