Margot Wallström, the United Nations Special Representative on the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict, is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which she describes as “the rape capital of the world”.
The Swede is visiting the east of the country, where armed groups are regularly accused of horrific violence against civilians. During her week long visit Wallström is interviewing survivors, to ensure that they get help in recovering from their ordeal. She will also look at ways to break the cycle of impunity in the country.
After meeting with a four year old rape victim in Goma Saturday, Wallström said “We have to go after the perpetrators. Zero tolerance can’t have zero consequences.”
