New outbreak of Newcastle virus

An outbreak of the Newcastle virus has been reported among wild birds in central Sweden and the Board of Agriculture are now warning that the virus could spread to domestic poultry in the province of Värmland.

The virus attacks the birds’ nervous system effecting breathing and digestion and could have a damaging effect on the poultry industry. But the virus is not dangerous to humans, news agency TT reports.
