Fewer sugar beet farmers in Sweden

With the year’s sugar beet harvest under way in Sweden, agricultural officials note that the number of beet farmers has decreased by 50% over the last decade – with only 2,100 farmers here still planting beets for the nation’s sugar industry.

Beet farmers here explain this by the dwindling profits from beet production, the decreases in European Union subsidies and lower quotas for beet production in the EU.
