A Palestinian cabinet minister has been granted a visa to attend a conference in Sweden, although two other Hamas officials had been denied entry.
Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson on Friday defended the move saying the consulate official in Jerusalem was only following rules when he gave the visa to the Palestinian Minister for Refugee Affairs Atef Adwan.
He added that if visa matters became a political decision then ”we would be on a slippery slope”.
The decision has been criticised by France and Israel. An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman has condemned the move saying it legitimises terrorism.
