Two young people found a hoard of silver coins from the Viking age, one thousand years ago, on the southern part of the island of Gotland. There have been a number of such finds on a Gotland. The new discovery is said to involve around three kilograms of silver coins, and is described by the local archeological authorities as “sensational”.
Meanwhile, a copper plate coin weighing 2.7 kilograms has been found in Norrtälje, north of Stockholm. Ten smaller coins were also found, under a house that was burned by Russian soldiers during their invasion of 1719. Such plate coins were used in Sweden during the middle of the 17th century.
